In 2007 India has more than 42 million Internet user and the number is increasing day by day. Based on the Internet portal business success Indian railway has also come up the portal www.irctc.co.in for booking tickets online. No doubt this is a good initiative by railway department but most of the times the portal remains down & its very pathetic to book the tickets on this portal.
Recently , I came across one more biggest drawback of this portal. Do you know how to cancel the eticket and when to cancel? If no I will tell you.
Canceling the eticket looks simple that go to portal select the ticket & click on cancel but what if the chart has been prepared? As per the Indian railway department if chart has been prepared once then you can not cancel the eticket even if you don’t travel you will not get a single penny returned. Recently my relatives went to JK tour and they have to caught the train from Jammu to Delhi at around 11.15am. They reached the station at morning 9.30am there they came to know that the train is late by some 6 hours as they have to caught the train from Delhi to Bangalore next day morning so they can’t wait for the train which is been late. So they some how manage to get the tickets in next train. In mean they thought of canceling the old eticket of Jammu to Delhi, but when they tried to cancel the eticket .. the portal have given the message “The Chart has been prepared for this ticket and you can’t cancel this ticket now.” then they have enquired at the Jammu station, can we cancel the eticket here as the train is late by approximate 24 hours. At station they came to know that eticket can be canceled only using the portal.
So in future if you try to cancel the eticket and get this message don’t get surprised as this the Indian railway policy and we the passengers will be the only losers.
Not only this if you compare the service charges we have to pay while booking and canceling the eticket is huge.
This is just to inform you about this if you feel that by writing against this we can do something for better service please write your comments here so that if by change some railway authority read this they will come to know about the problems faced by us.

File a TDR in irctc site, with reason ‘train is late more than 3 hours’. You will get your complete money back.

Its very bad, cheating…Indian Railways managers and Railway minister are big cheaters.

Surely Indian Railways are making profit of Rs. 20 Crores and above per year should not cheat people , by not refunding their money in the passenger has not travelled . It is sad that they are doing it .

it is cheating by the railways for the e-ticket wait list passengers because either the passengers are allowed to board the train or the money is refunded.

I dont have any comments. As we all know railways are always striving to provide the best of the services to the unmatched population of India and I am sure they are having complication in e-ticket cancellation for which we have to accept the same. I am sure railways will find some other option of e-ticket cancellation. I wish railways all the best.

Common Sense Dude!
all the people screaming here need to have some common sense!
tell me, if i book a ticket which is used on the train, at the same i take another print out of eticket and cancel it, if railway permitted, is that a good idea! will not people out there try to fraud railway given such chance?
in case of normal ticket it’s not possible, so that’s why one can cancel it even if one misses the train ot whatsoever reason may be there for not travelling.
do you think maker of such a nice service called irctc.co.in would have not thought of this things?
haha…
crying fools, aren’t thou !

You cannot cancel E-Tickets after chart preparation, but upto 30 days after scheduled arrival of the train at its destination in which you did not travel you can File TDR and apply for refund. For detailed process and workflow with screenshots please visit
http://www.irctc.co.in/cgi-bin/bv60.dll/irctc/services/FiletdrProc.do
Do not start cribbing and calling names to IR just like that. Take time to read the rules and act accordingly. This process may take abt 30 -60 days but Railways have to verify the same with the TTE Report for all PNRs of the train which he is supposed to file within 24 hours of the completion of a train’s journey. The TTE marks that particular PNR as ‘Passenger Not Travelled’ and once verified your refund is then credited to your account.
Refund Amount depends on the status of your ticket CNFand RAC -50% WL – Rs 10 deduction as well as the circumstances in which you did not travel e.g in case a train is late by more than 3 hours, you will get full refund no matter whether ur ticket was CNF/RAC/WL.
Its a long but logical procedure.

ID proof is must for eticket.
June 11, 2009 at 10:42 am |
You don’t need to have address proof to travel with e ticket, you (or at least one of the passenger of that ticket) needs PHOTO ID PROOF, without the PHOTO ID your eticket is not valid.

Cancellation of e-Tickets after the preparation of Reservation charts:
After chart preparation, Refunds for Confirmed/RAC/Partially Confirmed Eticket will be processed through TDR process.
Customer can file TDR online and refund sanctioned by Railways would be credited back to user/agents account.

Only those PNRs whose Date of journey is less than 30 days will be listed and shall be eligible for applying TDR.
Customers are requested to select PNR which are eligible for TDR filing. Please refer to File TDR Procedure

its ok that people can do fraud if e tickets are allowed to be cancelled after the chart is prepared but railways have to find a way of doing it. If the e ticket is not cancelled of a confirmed ticket and the passenger does not travell then the TTE will allot that birth to someone else and puts in his chart which is rec kept in reccord by the railways. The railway can take the cancellation details and take some time to verify the satus and do the refund later say a month or so same way as was done earlier when when current cancellation service counter was not available and people used to get refund after two months when ticket was not cancelled and passenger did not travell on his confirm ticket. Now tickets can be cancelled at Station even if the train has left. So why not E Tickets.

Dear Amrender, Chart Preparation also depends on origination station. Say at Origination Station train starts 12 hours before your boarding point then u can’t cancel your e-ticket 15 hours before the boarding time .. I hope this clarifies your question.
